Dangerous Goods Policy
At JRFS, the safety of our employees, customers, and the environment is paramount. This policy outlines our commitment to ensuring compliance with Australian laws for the handling, transport, and storage of dangerous goods.
What Are Dangerous Goods?
Dangerous goods are substances or articles that present risks to public safety, property, or the environment due to their explosive, flammable, toxic, infectious, or corrosive properties.
Examples Include:
- Lithium batteries
- Flammable liquids (e.g., petrol)
- Gases (flammable or toxic)
- Corrosive substances
- Toxic and infectious substances
Classes, Divisions, and Packing Groups
Dangerous goods are categorised into nine classes, with some classes subdivided into divisions. Each substance is also assigned to a packing group based on the degree of danger.
Classes and Divisions
- Explosives (e.g., fireworks, TNT)
- Division 1.1: Mass explosion hazard
- Division 1.2: Projection hazard only
- Division 1.3: Fire and minor explosion/projection hazards
- Division 1.4: Minor hazard substances and articles
- Division 1.5: Insensitive substances with mass explosion hazard
- Division 1.6: Extremely insensitive articles with no mass explosion hazard
- Gases
- Division 2.1: Flammable gases
- Division 2.2: Non-flammable, non-toxic gases
- Division 2.3: Toxic gases
- Flammable Liquids (e.g., petrol, alcohol)
- Flammable Solids
- Division 4.1: Flammable solids, self-reactive substances
- Division 4.2: Substances liable to spontaneous combustion
- Division 4.3: Substances emitting flammable gases in contact with water
- Oxidising Substances and Organic Peroxides
- Division 5.1: Oxidising substances
- Division 5.2: Organic peroxides
- Toxic and Infectious Substances
- Division 6.1: Toxic substances
- Division 6.2: Infectious substances

Packing Groups
- Group I: High danger
- Group II: Medium danger
- Group III: Low danger
Placards and UN Numbers
Each class of dangerous goods is represented by a placard (diamond-shaped label). Goods are assigned a UN number (4-digit identifier) for quick identification, found on labels, transport documents, or safety data sheets.
Roles and Responsibilities
Shippers (Consignors)
- Ensure dangerous goods are classified, packed, marked, and labelled according to the Australian Dangerous Goods Code (ADG).
- Provide a completed and accurate Dangerous Goods Transport Document to the driver.
- Notify the prime contractor that the goods are classified as dangerous.
Prime Contractors
- Safely transport dangerous goods by road.
- Report incidents involving dangerous goods during transport, loading, or unloading.
Packers, Loaders, and Vehicle Owners
- Ensure compliance with the ADG Code when handling and transporting dangerous goods.
- Verify that packaging and labelling meet regulatory standards.
Drivers
- Ensure the vehicle is correctly placarded and dangerous goods are safely secured.
- Carry the Dangerous Goods Transport Document during transport.
Shipping Dangerous Goods with JRFS
Our experienced team ensures compliance with all Australian regulations.
We Accept:
- Lithium Batteries
- Biological Substances (Category B, UN3373)
- Dry Ice
- Fully Regulated Dangerous Goods (including radioactive material)
- Dangerous Goods in Limited or Excepted Quantities
Prohibited Items:
- Goods that fail to meet legal or safety standards.
Additional Information and Costs
- Limited Quantities: Dangerous goods in limited quantities transported via road services within mainland Australia and intra-state Tasmania do not require a Dangerous Goods Shipper’s Declaration (DGD) form. However, goods shipped between Tasmania and mainland Australia still require the DGD form.
- Surcharges: Additional charges apply for dangerous goods due to specialised handling and transport requirements.

- Australian Dangerous Goods Code (road and rail).
- IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (air).
- IMDG Code (sea).
